Blockchain crypto purchases use an eligible card or a funded cash balance

Blockchain lets eligible Trading Account users buy crypto with a supported card or money already credited to a cash balance. The buy fee varies with payment method and order size, so the purchase preview matters for both choices. Funds credited for trading can still carry a withdrawal hold, including crypto bought with recently deposited cash.

These purchases belong to the managed Trading Account. Sending the acquired crypto to a self-custody wallet is a separate action, where the account permits it. The payment method determines how the purchase is funded; the account’s transfer rules govern where the crypto can go afterward.

A funded cash balance can pay for a crypto purchase while a deposit-related hold still restricts withdrawals.

The payment method changes the buy fee

A card-funded order and a cash-balance order can have different purchase fees, even when they buy the same crypto. The buy fee varies with the order size and the selected payment method. The preview shows the applicable fee before confirmation.

The quoted crypto price also includes a spread over the open-market rate, and that spread can change with market conditions. A displayed fee and the quoted price therefore describe different parts of the purchase cost. Comparing previews makes sense only when the asset, purchase currency and intended cash spend remain comparable. A quote from another moment can also reflect a changed market price.

Card purchases require account verification and bank approval

Full Access verification is a prerequisite for card purchases, and the payment also needs a supported card and the bank’s authentication. Direct card purchases support USD, EUR and GBP, with availability varying by region and account eligibility.

Card ownership and supported networks

The cardholder’s name must match the verified account holder’s name. Supported cards use Visa or Mastercard and must support 3D Secure, the additional bank authentication required for these purchases. Sharing a cardholder’s permission doesn’t change the account’s name-matching requirement. The payment processor or issuing bank can still reject a transaction because of insufficient funds, spending limits or unusual activity.

Bank authentication and purchase processing

The bank’s confirmation

3D Secure takes place through a bank-hosted website or mobile app. The exact confirmation method varies by bank. This authentication addresses the card payment; it doesn’t replace Full Access identity verification.

The processed buy order

After confirmation and authentication, the order still has to process before the purchased crypto appears in the account. A later withdrawal restriction is a separate matter from whether the bank accepted the payment.

A cash balance pays from money already credited

A cash-balance purchase uses funds in the Trading Account, with the selected trading currency matching the cash currency being spent. The buy interface presents the available payment choices for the selected purchase. Funding the account creates the cash balance; choosing that balance as payment uses it for the crypto order. Where offered, cash deposits can use a debit or credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.

The order preview remains part of this route. It identifies the intended purchase and its cost before confirmation, just as the card route does. Selecting an existing cash balance doesn’t create a fresh card payment for that order. Any restriction attached to the funds can remain relevant after they’ve been exchanged for crypto.

Cash funding and crypto buying have separate costs

A bank deposit fee can reduce the cash credited before a crypto purchase incurs its own buy fee. Funding costs depend on the currency and banking route. For eligible international USD deposits through SWIFT below 100,000 USD, the deposit fee is 10 USD, deducted from the incoming amount. That charge belongs to the deposit, not the subsequent crypto order.

NGN bank deposits have a different schedule: a 500 NGN deposit fee per transaction, deducted before the remaining funds reach the cash balance. These currency-specific rules aren’t interchangeable. The usable cash after a funding charge is the relevant starting balance for buying, subject to any applicable restriction. Trading with NGN also requires a Bank Verification Number (BVN). You don’t need to resubmit it if it was provided during verification.

Deposit credit and withdrawal release happen on different clocks

USD cash credited through Easy Bank Transfer, which uses ACH, can fund trading before the deposit-related withdrawal restriction expires.

ACH means Automated Clearing House, the bank-payment network used for this funding route. Payment processing commonly takes two to four business days and can take longer around weekends or holidays. Account credit often arrives earlier, although some deposits take up to five business days to be credited. Early trading access therefore doesn’t establish that bank processing has finished.

Easy Bank Transfer guidance gives up to five days before deposited USD or crypto bought with it can be sent or withdrawn. Balance-troubleshooting guidance instead lists ACH purchase holds of up to seven days. The ACH withdrawal restriction also covers the equivalent value of assets acquired with the deposited cash. Exchanging those assets within the account doesn’t remove that funding restriction. The account’s hold notice shows when the affected funds become available for withdrawal.

Bank processing time is measured in business days, while the published ACH hold periods use days. These periods don’t supply a universal deadline for card purchases or other cash-funding routes. Security concerns can also affect restrictions on an individual account.

Held purchases can remain available for account trading

A purchase-related hold can restrict cash withdrawal and crypto transfers while still allowing selling or swapping inside an eligible Trading Account.

Selling held crypto to cash doesn’t make the corresponding value withdrawable during the hold. Likewise, an internal swap changes the asset held without necessarily changing the withdrawal restriction. Swap fees belong to that separate exchange action and its quote, so they shouldn’t be folded into the original buy fee. Internal trading availability and permission to send funds outside the account are distinct account states.

Crypto quantity and cash valuation measure different things

The cash value displayed after a purchase reflects market valuation, while the asset quantity records how much crypto the account holds. Those measures can move differently. A price decline can reduce the cash valuation even when the number of crypto units hasn’t changed.

The completed purchase details are the appropriate basis for reconciling the acquired quantity. A later balance valuation uses the price at the time it’s displayed. It isn’t a second statement of the original cash payment. The comparison also needs the correct account section: a Trading Account balance and a DeFi Wallet balance belong to different custody arrangements.

Payment limits still apply to verified accounts

Full Access enables custodial buying, but the payment method can still impose its own transaction limit and eligibility checks. Verification doesn’t make every funding amount acceptable. Eligible USD ACH deposits have a maximum of 5000 USD per transaction.

Account limits can also reflect verification level, payment method and account activity. A payment option must remain available for the particular account and intended transaction. Holding enough cash establishes funding capacity; it doesn’t erase an account restriction or make an unsupported payment route usable.

Using a Recovery Phrase for wallet recovery can trigger renewed identity verification and restrict Trading Account withdrawals until the account’s identity is reconfirmed.

The bank route determines how cash reaches the account

Bank-transfer funding requires the banking route and deposit details assigned to the selected currency, with requirements differing between transfer methods.

EUR funding through SEPA requires a bank supporting that route, payment in euros and a matching account-holder name. SEPA means Single Euro Payments Area. The receiving details include the recipient and the required banking identifiers shown in the account. Sending a SWIFT payment to those SEPA instructions can cause delay or loss. A purchase paid from the resulting balance remains a later, separate use of the deposited cash.

For UK GBP funding, Faster Payments uses the deposit details displayed in the account. GBP receiving details changed from July 1, 2026, so previously saved instructions may no longer credit the balance. The sender’s bank-account name must match the verified name. A stored bank payee is therefore useful only while its receiving details remain valid.

International USD SWIFT deposits are available only for eligible locations outside the US. They require a personal bank account in the verified holder’s name and compatible international transfer support. That route has its own fees and processing conditions. Its availability doesn’t establish that a local USD wire deposit is available to the same account.

Migrated accounts have a different purchase arrangement

Accounts covered by the migrated Bakkt Crypto Solutions experience use USD ACH funding and don’t support card payments or wire transfers. Their account experience is mobile-only. The crypto buying and selling options belong to that migrated arrangement, so the standard card instructions can’t be applied to it.

These migrated Trading Accounts also don’t support crypto transfers to external wallets or transfers between the Trading Account and DeFi Wallet. A purchase becoming available for trading therefore doesn’t promise a later crypto withdrawal from that account. Its DeFi Wallet can continue sending and receiving supported crypto separately.

Some existing accounts remain under Bakkt’s framework, while others are onboarded directly onto the main platform. The migrated payment and transfer restrictions apply to that arrangement. Location alone doesn’t identify which arrangement an account uses.

Should I buy crypto with a card or my cash balance?

The useful choice depends on available funding, the current purchase quote and what the account permits after buying. A cash balance visible for trading can coexist with an unavailable withdrawal. An eligible card offers a different funding path, with its own approval conditions.

  • Choose a cash balance only when enough funds are available for buying in the intended purchase currency.
  • Consider a card when card purchases are offered and a supported card in your name can complete bank authentication.
  • Compare current previews for the same crypto and cash spend, including the quoted price and buy fee.
  • If the purchase is intended for an external transfer, account support and the applicable hold must permit that transfer.
  • For a Bakkt-migrated Trading Account, choose USD ACH funding; external crypto transfers aren’t supported.

Spending an available cash balance avoids another card payment at purchase time. Paying by card avoids funding a cash balance beforehand. Neither choice establishes immediate withdrawal access; that depends on the funding restriction and the account’s transfer capabilities.

Before you start with Blockchain

What can I try after a virtual-card purchase fails?

If a virtual-card payment fails, you can try the physical card’s details. The card still needs to meet the supported-network, 3D Secure and name-matching requirements. Changing the details used doesn’t override the issuer’s cryptocurrency-payment policy or the account’s purchase eligibility.

When should I retry after several declined card purchases?

Wait 24 hours from the last attempt if several card purchases failed within a short period. Before another attempt, resolve an incorrect card detail, insufficient funds or an issuer restriction where applicable. Repeated retries don’t change the bank’s payment policy.

How many cards can be linked to a wallet profile?

A wallet profile can have up to 10 linked cards in the card-purchase setup. That limit describes saved cards, not the number of purchases permitted. Each order still needs to meet the account’s eligibility requirements and the selected payment method’s limits.

Can cash deposits come from a payment-processing account?

Deposits from third-party payment processor accounts aren’t supported. This restriction applies to cash funding even when the processor account contains your money. A bank account still needs to meet the selected deposit method’s name-matching and transfer requirements.

Will a returned international wire refund the entire deposit?

A returned USD international wire can be reduced by a banking-partner processing fee if the deposit doesn’t meet its requirements. For those noncompliant deposits, the fee can be up to 20 USD, deducted from the refund. This funding route requires a personal bank account in the verified account holder’s name.

Are local USD wire deposits available for funding a purchase?

Local USD wire deposits are temporarily unavailable. Eligible accounts may have ACH funding or card purchases as alternatives. This pause concerns domestic USD wire deposits; international SWIFT funding has separate location and account requirements. A saved local-wire payee doesn’t establish that the route is operating.
